Peace, Unity & Love this Christmas Our Dear Friends, Christ's Peace be with you! For the Feast of Christmas, we send you our heartfelt, most affectionate wishes. As Christ is reborn, we pray for the devotion to St. Philomena to be reborn. On the birth of Jesus, accept our prayers in these holy days for you and your families. May St. Philomena light the Filomenaian Family around the world. It is with great pleasure that both of us, Monsignor Giovanni Braschi, Rector of the Shrine of Saint Philomena & Director of the Universal Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena, and Patti Melvin, Director of the Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena (ULRA), greet you today in this season of Advent. It is our decision to begin anew the relationship of our two organizations. The season of advent symbolizes "beginnings" and seems the perfect time to greet you together. The literal meaning of the word Advent is: "Arrival that has been awaited - especially of something momentous." May your Holy Christmas Season Be filled with deepest Joy and Peace! O Divine Infant Jesus, Bless and protect us and obtain for us Thine own Heart's Love For the Immaculate! Let us bow our hearts In adoration of Christ, Our Infant King! Our statement of Unity: "It is our aim to reach out to our youth. We need them to become the strongest part of this union; we need them to be the glue that holds our faith together. Will you help us? Become part of this campaign. Inside each of you is a voice saying that you can do more. Allow this voice to be heard. Reach out and join us by sharing with our youth this invitation to PURITY AND PRAYER, in your family, in your schools and at your parish; one by one!" Thoughts from Msgr. Braschi "The first time I met Patti was in Texas in 1987. She had written a petition to the Sanctuary the year before and we had built up contact, she had 20 Saint Philomena devotees in the group she had set up. I went to meet them and give Patti and her husband Richard their permission letter to spread devotion to Saint Philomena and the Living Rosary in the USA and Canada. I took some very important historical books for her and was there for Thanksgiving. It was all very new to us then. This was the second center of the Archconfraternity. It is with great joy in my heart that I acknowledge the vast worldwide work that Patti Melvin's Living Rosary has done in promoting devotion to Our Lady and Saint Philomena. It is her missionary work that has kept the devotion to Saint Philomena strong. People come to the Sanctuary with a Living Rosary prayer card in their hand. I encourage you in this Special Christmas Message to join her Living Rosary and pray the rosary. The joyful mysteries alone tell the story of Christmas and if we are to offer anything up to God at this time of year it should be to lift our rosary beads and pray the joyful mysteries in thanksgiving to Our Heavenly Mother. Join the Universal Living Rosary and take up a dedicated decade." Thoughts from Patti Melvin "My husband Richard and I are planning our very first pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in January for the Blessing of the Holy Oil Feast. Many of the Living Rosary Center leaders from around the world have made recent pilgrimages to the Sanctuary and received warm hospitality. I encourage you all to make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary. We plan to meet with Msgr. Braschi to discuss the best way to join our efforts for the Youth, the Cause of Pauline Jaricot and the return of Saint Philomena to the Liturgical Calendar. With the Living Rosary Association membership now approaching twelve million strong and the many hundreds of thousands of Archconfraternity members, we plan to mobilize our efforts in union with many other associations devoted to Saint Philomena to advance honor and devotion to this great martyr and champion of purity. Msgr. Braschi and I will make a joint statement in February to announce the details of this wonderful crusade for youth." The following is a brief summary demonstrating the connections between our organizations: Pope Gregory XVI raised Philomena to the status of Saint and also named her the Patroness of the Living Rosary Association and Pope Pius IX granted to her the glorious title: Patroness of the Children of Mary. The Living Rosary Association founded by Pauline Jaricot in Lyon, France was approved and richly indulgenced by Pope Gregory XVI and accorded official canonical status on January 27, 1832. On January 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI named Philomena, Patroness of the Living Rosary Association and declared her to be the "Thaumaturga," the "Great Wonder-Worker of the Nineteenth Century." The Confraternity of Saint Philomena was founded by Fr. Louis Petit in Paris and on November 30, 1886, and his Holiness, Pope Leo XIII, raised this Confraternity of Saint Philomena to the rank of Archconfraternity. On June 16, 1907, the Supreme Pontiff Pius X, receiving in audience Fr. Petit, exclaimed: "...the great argument in favor of devotion to Saint Philomena is the Curé of Ars. By her, in her name, and through her intercession, he obtained innumerable graces and continual prodigies." Saint Pope Pius X named St. Jean Vianney, Patron of the Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena. In an apostolic brief on May 21, 1912, Saint Pope Pius X extended the Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena to the entire Church, by raising it to the status of Universal. He stated "All the decisions and declarations of his predecessors regarding Saint Philomena should in no way be altered." A hundred years went by and both organizations seemed to fade out of sight. The year after Fr. Giovanni Braschi was appointed Rector of the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale, Avellino, Italy (1983) he decided to revive the Archconfraternity. Fr. Braschi had grown up in Mugnano and had watched the devotion of that small community to Saint Philomena and desired that this devotion be rekindled. The Living Rosary Association began its revival in the United States on December 8, 1986 with Patti and Richard Melvin. Patti & Richard Melvin of the Universal Living Rosary Association of Saint Philomena are today an Official center of the Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena. They have permission to invite membership worldwide, from wherever their association takes them. Msgr. Giovanni Braschi encourages all who visit the Sanctuary to renew their devotion to Our Lady under the powerful guidance of St. Philomena. This devotion to the Virgin Mary is very important as she is the Queen of Martyrs and the Mother of our Sacred Church. Through the intercession of St. Philomena, she leads us to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. "Hallelujah! Happy are those who fear the LORD, who greatly delight in God's commands. Their descendants shall be mighty in the land, a generation upright and blessed. (Psalm 112:1-2, The Blessings of the Just)" When we reflect upon this sacred scripture, we are inspired to obey God's commands, to love Jesus with our whole heart and soul and desire to please Him. His promise to us is blessings for a generation of godly people. All God asks is for us to stay close to Him always. Everything we do has a possible effect of good or bad on an entire generation. If we want our children to succeed in all that they do, we must encourage them to have Christ at the center of their lives. Jesus is the BEST gift we can give our children and loved ones. He's the only gift that keeps on giving for eternity. At this most joyous time of year, let us ponder this message in union with our beloved St. Philomena, and remember that it is through Him, with Him, in Him that eternal blessings are showered upon all mankind. Let us do our part to bring the youth and people of all ages to come and adore Christ, our Savior! Per questo Santo Natale: Pace, Unità e Amore ! Cari amici, La pace di Cristo sia con voi! In occasione della festa del Santo Natale, vi inviamo i nostri più affettuosi e sinceri Auguri. Nella ricorrenza della Nascita di Cristo, preghiamo per il risveglio della devozione a Santa Filomena, invitandovi ad accettare le nostre preghiere per voi e le vostre famiglie. Abbiamo bisogno di loro per rafforzare questa unione, affinché essi diventino il fulcro che tiene insieme la nostra fede. In ognuno di voi c´è una voce che vi sprona a fare di più; permettetele di essere ascoltata. Avvicinatevi e unitevi a noi, condividendo con i nostri giovani l´invito alla PUREZZA e alla PREGHIERA nella vostra famiglia, nelle vostre scuole e nella vostra Parrocchia: uno per uno!" Pensiero di Mons. Giovanni Braschi "La prima volta che ho incontrato Patti è stato in Texas nel 1987. Aveva scritto una petizione al Santuario l'anno prima e da quel momento siamo rimasti in contatto. All´epoca, nel gruppo che aveva creato, si contavano 20 devoti di Santa Filomena. Incontrai Patti e suo marito Richard per consegnare loro la lettera dell´autorizzazione alla diffusione della devozione a Santa Filomena e del Rosario Vivente negli Stati Uniti e in Canada. In quell´occasione le portai alcuni libri e sono rimasto con loro per festeggiare il giorno del Ringraziamento. Per noi, era una novità. Questo è stato il secondo centro dell´Arciconfraternita. É con immensa gioia che riconosco la grande opera in tutto il mondo che il Rosario Vivente di Patti Melvin ha fatto nel promuovere la devozione alla Madonna e a Santa Filomena. Il suo lavoro missionario ha rafforzato la devozione alla Santa. I fedeli arrivano al Santuario con in mano la preghiera del Rosario Vivente. Vi incoraggio, con questo speciale Messaggio di Natale, ad unirvi alla preghiera del Santo Rosario. Possa Santa Filomena, Patrona del Rosario Vivente, far scendere una rugiada spirituale nei nostri cuori durante queste feste natalizie. I misteri gaudiosi raccontano da sé la storia del Natale e, se vogliamo offrire qualcosa a Dio in questo periodo dell'anno, dovrebbe essere quello di innalzare il nostro rosario e pregare i misteri gaudiosi per rendere grazie alla nostra Madre." Pensiero di Patti Melvin "Mio marito Richard ed io stiamo progettando il nostro primo pellegrinaggio al Santuario di Santa Filomena a gennaio per la benedizione dell'olio di Santa Filomena. Molti dei leader del centro del Rosario Vivente di tutto il mondo hanno organizzato recenti pellegrinaggi al Santuario ed hanno ricevuto una calorosa ospitalità. Incoraggio tutti voi a fare un pellegrinaggio al Santuario. Abbiamo in programma di incontrarci con Mons. Braschi per discutere il modo migliore per unire le nostre forze a favore della gioventù, la Causa di Pauline Jaricot e il ritorno di Santa Filomena al Calendario Liturgico. Con il Rosario Vivente, i cui soci dell´associazione sfiorano ormai dodici milioni, e le molte centinaia di migliaia di membri dell'Arciconfraternita, abbiamo intenzione di adoperarci in unione con molte altre associazioni dedicate a Santa Filomena, per promuovere ancora di più la devozione a questa grande Martire, esempio di purezza. Mons. Braschi ed io realizzeremo una dichiarazione congiunta a febbraio per comunicare i dettagli di questa meravigliosa crociata per i giovani." Quanto segue è un breve riassunto per dimostrare i passati rapporti tra le nostre organizzazioni: Papa Gregorio XVI innalzò Filomena a rango di Santa e le assegnò il titolo di Patrona del Rosario Vivente; Papa Pio IX le conferì il titolo glorioso di Patrona dei Figli di Maria. L'Associazione del Rosario Vivente fondata da Pauline Jaricot a Lione, in Francia, fu approvata da Papa Gregorio XVI e le fu accordato lo stato canonico ufficiale il 27 gennaio 1832. Il 13 gennaio 1837, Papa Gregorio XVI nominò Santa Filomena, Patrona del Rosario Vivente e la proclamò "taumaturga", la "fautrice di grandi opere del XIX secolo". La Confraternita di Santa Filomena è stata fondata da Don Louis Petit a Parigi e il 30 novembre 1886 Sua Santità, Papa Leone XIII, elevò la Confraternita di Santa Filomena ad Arciconfraternita. Il 16 giugno 1907, il Sommo Pontefice Pio X, ricevendo in udienza Don Petit, esclamò: "... il grande argomento a favore della devozione a Santa Filomena è il Curato d'Ars. Per lei, nel suo nome, e per sua intercessione, ha ottenuto innumerevoli grazie e continui prodigi.." San Pio X, proclamò San Giovanni Vianney, Patrono dell'Arciconfraternita di Santa Filomena. Durante un compendio apostolico, il 21 maggio 1912, San Pio X estese l'Arciconfraternita di Santa Filomena a tutta la Chiesa, elevandola al rango di Universale. Egli dichiarò: "Tutte le decisioni e le dichiarazioni dei suoi predecessori per quanto riguarda Santa Filomena non devono in alcun modo essere modificate." Passarono cento anni e le due organizzazioni sembravano perdersi di vista. Don Giovanni Braschi, un anno dopo la sua nomina (1983) a Rettore del Santuario di Santa Filomena a (Mugnano del Cardinale- Avellino- Italia) ha deciso di rilanciare l'Arciconfraternita. Don Braschi è cresciuto a Mugnano, ha visto la devozione di quella piccola comunità per Santa Filomena e ha desiderato che questa devozione fosse riaccesa. L'Associazione del Rosario Vivente iniziò la sua rinascita negli Stati Uniti l'8 dicembre 1986 con Patti e Richard Melvin. Patti e Richard Melvin, promotori del Rosario Vivente Universale di S. Filomena, rappresentano oggi un Centro Ufficiale dell'Arciconfraternita di Santa Filomena e hanno il permesso di ricercare membri in tutto il mondo, ovunque la loro associazione li porti. Mons. Giovanni Braschi incoraggia tutti coloro che visitano il Santuario a rinnovare la loro devozione alla Madonna sotto la guida potente di Santa Filomena. Questa devozione alla Vergine Maria è molto importante in quanto è Lei la Regina dei Martiri e la Madre della nostra Santa Chiesa ed è Lei che ci porta ai Cuori di Gesù e Maria. "Alleluia! Beato colui che teme il Signore, e trova grande gioia nei suoi comandamenti. La sua progenie sarà potente sulla terra, la posterità degli uomini giusti sarà benedetta." (Salmo 112:1-2, le benedizioni del Giusto) Quando riflettiamo su questa Sacra Scrittura, siamo ispirati ad obbedire ai comandamenti di Dio, ad amare Gesù con tutto il cuore e desideriamo compiacere il suo volere. Tutto quello che Dio chiede è di stargli sempre vicino. Ciò che facciamo ha un effetto buono o cattivo nei confronti di un'intera generazione. Se vogliamo che i nostri figli abbiano successo in tutto quello che fanno, dobbiamo incoraggiarli ad avere Cristo al centro della loro vita. Gesù è il dono migliore che possiamo fare ai nostri figli e cari. Lui è l'unico che continua a prodigarsi per l'eternità. In questo momento dell'anno, pieno di gioia, cerchiamo di riflettere su questo messaggio in unione con la nostra amata Santa Filomena, e ricordare che è attraverso di Lei, con Lei ed in Lei che le eterne benedizioni vengono riversate su tutta l'umanità. Facciamo la nostra parte per portare tutti i giovani e le persone di ogni età ad adorare Cristo, nostro Salvatore! Auguriamo a tutti voi grandi benedizioni di Natale e preghiamo affinché vi uniate per aiutarci a raggiungere i giovani del mondo. C'è tanto lavoro da fare e non possiamo farlo senza il vostro aiuto! Friede, Einheit und Liebe zur heiligen Weihnacht Meine lieben Freunde! Der Friede Christi sei mit Euch! Zu Weihnachten senden wir Euch unsere herzlichsten Glückwünsche. In dieser Adventszeit der Wiedergeburt Christi beten wir um eine Wiederbelebung der Verehrung der Heiligen Philomena. In diesen Feiertagen bitten wir Euch darum, unsere Gebete für Euch und Eure Familien anzunehmen. Möge die Hl. Philomena die Philomeniane Familie in aller Welt erleuchten. Mit großer Freude empfangen wir, Monsignore Giovanni Braschi, Rektor des Heiligtums der Hl. Philomena, Direktor der Erzbruderschaft der Hl. Philomena und Patti Melvin, Direktorin des universalen "Lebendigen Rosenkranzes", Euch in dieser Adventszeit. Unsere gemeinsame Absicht ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen unseren beiden Organisationen zu beginnen. Möge die Adventszeit Symbol eines "Neubeginnes" sein, das ist die richtige Zeit, nämlich das Wort "Advent" bedeutet gerade "das Ankommen von etwas wirklich Wichtigen" das man erwartet hat. Könne die heilige Weihnacht voller Freude und Frieden sein O göttliches Christkind segne und behüte uns und schenke uns deine Liebe für Unbefleckte Jungfrau Maria wir beugen uns In Anbetung vor Christus, unserem König! Unsere Botschaft der Einheit "Unser Ziel ist unsere Jugendlichen zu erreichen. Wir brauchen sie um stärkster Teil dieser Einheit zu werden, damit sie der zusammenhaltende Kern unseres Glaubens werden. Werde Mitglied dieser Kampagne! In jedem von Euch liegt eine Stimme, die Euch dazu bringt, mehr zu tun. Lass diese Stimme gehört zu werden. Tritt näher und schließ dich uns an und teile mit unseren Jugendlichen die Einladung auf Reinheit und Gebet, in Eurer Familie, in Euren Schulen und in Eurer Pfarrkirche." Gedanken von Mons. Braschi "Das erste Mal, dass ich Patti traf, war 1987 in Texas: Sie hatte ein Jahr vorher eine Petition an das Heiligtum gerichtet, und von da an hielten wir uns in Verbindung; damals zählte die von ihr gegründete Gruppe 20 fromme Anhänger der Hl. Philomena. Damals traf ich Patti und ihren Mann Richard und gab ihnen die Erlaubnis die Hingabe an die Hl. Philomena und den lebendigen Rosenkranz in USA und Kanada auszubreiten. In jeder Gelegenheit brachte ich ihr einige Bücher, ich war dort für das Erntedankfest. Es war alles ganz neu für uns, damals. Das war das zweite Zentrum der Erzbruderschaft. Es ist mit großer Freude in meinem Herzen, dass ich das weite Werk erkenne, das der lebendige Rosenkranz von Patti in aller Welt gemacht hat um die Hingabe an unsere Jungfrau und an die Hl.Philomena zu fördern. Ihr Missionswerk hat die Hingabe an die Hl.Philomena stark gehalten. Die Gläubigen kommen zum Heiligtum mit dem Gebet des lebendigen Rosenkranzes in der Hand. In dieser speziellen Weihnachtsbotschaft ermutige ich Euch zur Vereinigung mit dem lebendigen Rosenkranz und zum Gebet vom Rosenkranz. Die freudvollen Mysterien erzählen schon die Geschichte der Geburt Christi und wenn wir Gott etwas in dieser Zeit des Jahres anbieten wollen, sollen wir unseren Rosenkranz heben und die freudvollen Mysterien beten um unserer Himmlischen Mutter zu danken. Nimm an dem universalen lebendigen Rosenkranz teil und nimm eine heilige Dekade." Gedanken von Patti Melvin "Mein Mann und ich planen gerade unsere erste Wallfahrt zum Heiligtum der Hl. Philomena im Januar für den Segen des Öles der Hl. Philomena. Viele Leiter der Zentren vom lebendigen Rosenkranz aus aller Welt haben neulich Wallfahrten zum Heiligtum gemacht und haben eine warme Gastfreundschaft empfunden. Ich ermutige Euch alle eine Wallfahrt zum Heiligtum zu machen. Wir haben vor, uns mit Mons. Braschi zu treffen um darüber zu reden, wie wir unsere Kräfte für die Jugend , für die Frage von Pauline Jaricot und für die Rückkehr der Hl. Philomena in den liturgischen Kalender am besten vereinigen können. Zusammen mit dem lebendigen Rosenkranz, dessen Mitglieder jetzt etwa 12 Millionen sind, und mit den vielen Hunderten von Tausenden Mitgliedern der Erzbruderschaft beabsichtigen wir unsere Bemühungen mit vielen anderen Philomenianen Gemeinschaften zu mobilisieren um die Hingabe an diese große Märtyrerin und Vorbild für die Reinheit zu fördern. Mons. Braschi und ich werden gemeinsam im Februar Details dieser a ußergewöhnlichen Kampagne für die Jugendlichen mitteilen." Hier folgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung um die vergangenen Verbindungen zwischen unseren Gemeinschaften zu zeigen: Papst Gregor XVI ernannte Philomena zur Heiligen und verlieh ihr den Titel von Patronin des lebendigen Rosenkranzes; Papst Pius IX verlieh ihr den freudevollen Titel von Patronin der Kinder Marias. Der lebendige Rosenkranz, von Pauline Jaricot in Lyon, in Frankreich gegründet, wurde von Papst Gregor XVI angenommen und am 27. Januar 1832 offizialisiert. Am 13. Januar 1837 wurde die Hl. Philomena zur Patronin des lebendigen Rosenkranzes erhoben und als "Wundertäterin", als "Täterin von großen Werken im XIX Jahrhundert proklamiert". Die Bruderschaft der Hl. Philomena wurde am 30. November 1886 in Paris von Fr. Louis Petit gegründet, Seine Heiligkeit, Papst Leo XIII erhob die Bruderschaft der Hl. Philomena in den Rang einer Erzbruderschaft. Am 16. Juni 1907 empfing Papst Pius X Pater Petit, in Audienz, und er rief aus; "das größte Argument zu Gunsten der Heiligen Philomena ist der hl. Pfarrer von Ars. Durch sie und in ihrem Namen und durch ihre Fürsprache hat er unzählige Gnaden und immerfort Wunder erlangt." Der hl. Pius X rief den hl. Giovanni Vianney Patron der Erzbruderschaft der Hl. Philomena aus. Mit dem Apostolischen Breve am 12. Mai 1912 erhob der hl. Pius X die Erzbruderschaft der Hl. Philomena zur universalen (weltweiten) Erzbruderschaft. Er erklärte: "Alle Entscheidungen und Erklärungen von seinen Vorgängern über die Hl. Philomena dürfen in keiner Form verändert werden." Hundert Jahre vergingen und die zwei Gemeinschaften schienen sich aus den Augen zu verlieren. Ein Jahr, nachdem Fr. Giovanni Braschi 1983 als Rektor des Heiligtums der Hl. Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale, Avellino, Italia, erkannt wurde, beschloss er die Erzbruderschaft wieder zu fördern. Fr. Braschi war in Mugnano aufgewachsen und hatte die Andacht zur Hl. Philomena in jener kleinen Gemeinschaft gesehen und er wünschte sich, dass diese Andacht wieder neuerweckt werden würde. Der lebendige Rosenkranz begann seine Wiedergeburt am 8. Dezember 1986 In USA mit Patti und Richard Melvin. Patti und Richard Melvin des lebendigen Rosenkranzes der Hl. Philomena vertreten heute ein offizielles Zentrum der Erzbruderschaft der Hl. Philomena. Sie haben die Erlaubnis Mitglieder in aller Welt einzuladen, wohin ihre Assoziation sie führt. Mons. Giovanni Braschi ermutigt alle diejenigen, die das Heiligtum der Hl. Philomena besuchen um ihre Andacht zur Jungfrau Maria unter der mächtigen Führung der Hl. Philomena zu erneuern. Diese Andacht zur Jungfrau Maria ist sehr wichtig, da sie die Königin der Märtyrer und die Mutter unserer heiligen Kirche ist. Durch die Fürsprache der Hl. Philomena führt sie uns zu den Herzen von Jesus und Maria. Halleluja! "Halleluja. Selig sei der Mensch, der Gott fürchtet Und in seinen Geboten große Freude findet. Jesus ist die beste Gabe, die wir unseren Kindern und Lieben geben können. Die einzige Gabe ist Er, der sich ewiglich aufopfert. In diesem freudvollen Moment des Jahres versuchen wir mit unseren Geliebten St. Philomena nachzudenken über diese Botschaft und uns erinnern, dass durch Ihn, mit Ihm und in Ihm die ewigen Segnungen auf die gesamte Menschheit ausströmen. La pensée de Mgr Braschi "La première fois que j'ai rencontré Patti était au Texas en 1987. Elle avait écrit une pétition pour le Sanctuaire l'année précédente et depuis ce temps nous sommes restés en contact ; à cette époque-là dans le groupe qu´elle avait créé, il y avait 20 fidèles de Sainte Philomène. J'ai rencontré Patti et son mari Richard pour leur donner la lettre d'autorisation à la propagation de la dévotion à Sainte Philomène et au Rosaire Vivant aux états-Unis et au Canada. A l´ époque, j'ai apporté quelques livres et je suis resté avec eux pour célébrer le Jour du Remerciement. C'est avec une joie immense que je reconnais l'excellent travail dans le monde entier que, le Rosaire Vivant de Patti Melvin, a fait pour la promotion de la dévotion à Notre-Dame et à Sainte Philomène. Son travail missionnaire a renforcé la dévotion pour la Petite Sainte. Les fidèles arrivent au Sanctuaire avec la prière du Rosaire Vivant. Je vous encourage, avec ce message de Noël, à nous rejoindre à la prière du Saint Rosaire. Puisse Sainte Philomène, Patronne du Rosaire Vivant, faire descendre une rosée spirituelle dans notre cœur au cours de cette période de Noël. " La pensée de Patti Melvin "Mon mari Richard et moi, nous sommes en train d´organiser notre premier pèlerinage au Sanctuaire de Sainte Philomène en Janvier pour la bénédiction de l'huile de Sainte Philomène. Beaucoup de dirigeants du centre du Rosaire Vivant dans le monde entier ont organisé des récents pèlerinages au Sanctuaire et ont reçu un accueil chaleureux. Je vous encourage à faire un pèlerinage au Sanctuaire. Nous avons l'intention de rencontrer Mgr Braschi pour discuter de la meilleure façon d'unir nos forces pour les jeunes, pour la Cause de Pauline Jaricot et pour le retour de Sainte Philomène dans le Calendrier Liturgique. Avec l'Association du Rosaire Vivant, dont les membres comptent aujourd´hui douze millions, et les centaines de milliers de membres de l'Archiconfrérie, nous avons l'intention de travailler avec plusieurs autres associations dédiées à Sainte Philomène, pour promouvoir encore plus la dévotion à cette grande Martyre, un exemple de pureté. Mgr Braschi et moi, nous atteindrons une déclaration commune en Février pour rapporter les détails de cette croisade formidable pour les jeunes. " Ce qui suit est un bref résumé pour montrer les relations entre nos deux organisations: le Pape Grégoire XVI a élevé Philomène au rang de Sainte en Lui donnant le titre de Patronne du Rosaire Vivant; le Pape Pie IX lui a donné le titre glorieux de Patronne des Enfants de Marie. L´ Association du Rosaire Vivant, fondée par Pauline Jaricot à Lyon, en France, a été approuvé par le Pape Grégoire XVI et a obtenu le statut officiel canonique le 27 Janvier 1832. Le 13 Janvier 1837, le Pape Grégoire XVI a nommé Sainte Philomène, Patronne du Rosaire Vivant et l´a proclamé "thaumaturge", la "défenseur des grandes œuvres du XIXe siècle." L´Archiconfrérie de Sainte Philomène a été fondée par le père Petit Louis à Paris et le 30 Novembre 1886, le Pape Léon XIII a élève la Confrérie de Sainte Philomène au titre Archiconfrérie. Le 16 Juin 1907, le Pape Pie X, a reçu en audience père Petit, et a déclaré: "... le grand argument en faveur de la dévotion à Sainte Philomène est le Curé d'Ars; pour Elle, en son nom, et par son intercession, il a obtenu beaucoup de grâces et miracles ..." Saint Pie X a déclaré Saint-Jean-Marie Vianney, patron de l´Archiconfrérie de Sainte Philomène. Lors d'un recueil apostolique le 21 mai 1912, Saint Pie X étendu l´Archiconfrérie de Sainte Philomène à toute l'église. Il a déclaré: "Toutes les décisions et déclarations de ses prédécesseurs à l'égard de Sainte Philomène ne doivent pas être modifié en aucune façon." Cent ans ont passé et les deux organisations semblaient se perdre de vue. L'année d'après que Don Giovanni Braschi a été nommé Recteur du Sanctuaire de Sainte Philomène à Mugnano del Cardinale, Avellino, Italie (1983) a décidé de relancer l´Archiconfrérie. Don Braschi a grandi à Mugnano et il a vu la dévotion de cette petite communauté de Sainte Philomène, et donc a souhaité raviver cette dévotion. L´ Association du Rosaire Vivant a commencé sa renaissance dans les états-Unis le 8 Décembre, 1986 grâce à Patti et Richard Melvin. Patti et Richard Melvin, les promoteurs du Rosaire Vivant Universel de Sainte Philomène, représentent aujourd´hui un centre officiel de l'Archiconfrérie de Sainte Philomène. Ils sont autorisés à recruter dans le monde des nouveaux membres. Mgr Giovanni Braschi encourage tous ceux qui visitent le Sanctuaire à renouveler leur dévotion à Notre-Dame sous la direction puissante de Sainte Philomène. Cette dévotion à la Vierge Marie est très importante car Elle est la Reine des Martyrs et de la Mère de la Sainte église et c'est Elle qui nous conduit aux Cœurs de Jésus et de Marie. "Alléluia! Béni soit celui qui craint le Seigneur, et prend plaisir à ses commandements. Sa descendance sera puissante sur la terre, la postérité des justes sera bénie." (Psaume 112:1-2, les bénédictions des Justes) Quand nous réfléchissons sur ce passage, nous sommes inspirés à respecter les commandements de Dieu, à aimer Jésus de tout notre cœur. Sa promesse de bénédiction pour nous, est une génération de gens pieux. Tout ce que Dieu vous demande est de rester proche de Lui. Si nous voulons que nos enfants arrivent dans tout ce qu'ils font, nous devons les encourager à avoir Jésus Christ au centre de leur vie. Jésus est le meilleur cadeau que nous pouvons faire pour nos enfants et nos proches. Il est le seul qui continue à œuvrer pour l'éternité. Dans cette période de l'année, plein de joie, nous nous interrogerons sur ce message en union avec notre bien-aimé Sainte Philomène, et rappelez-vous que c'est grâce à Elle, avec Elle et en Elle que les bénédictions éternelles se répandent sur toute l'humanité. Nous faisons notre part pour mettre tous les jeunes de tous âges à adorer le Christ notre Sauveur! A Confraria de Santa Filomena foi fundada pelo Padre Luis Petit de Paris em 30 de Novembro de 1886 e sua Santidade , o Papa Leão XIII, elevou esta Confraria de Santa Filomena à categoria de Arquiconfraria. A 16 de Junho de 1907, o Supremo Pontífice São Pio X, ao receber em audiência o Padre Petit, exclamou: "…o grande argumento a favor da devoção a Santa Filomena é o Cura d´Ars. Por ela, em seu nome e por sua intercessão, obteve inúmeras graças e contínuos prodígios". São Pio X nomeou São João Maria Vianney, Padroeiro da Arquiconfraria de Santa Filomena. Em breve carta apostólica, a 21 de Maio de 1912, São Pio X estendeu a Arquiconfraria de Santa Filomena a toda a Igreja, elevando-a a Universal. Afirmou que "todas as decisões e declarações dos seus antecessores com respeito a Santa Filomena não devem ser alteradas, de forma alguma." Cem anos passaram e ambas as organizações pareceram desaparecer de vista. No ano seguinte ao que o Padre Giovanni Braschi foi nomeado Reitor do Santuário de Santa Filomena em Mugnano del Cardinale, Avellino, Itália (1983), ele decidiu renascer a Arquiconfraria. Padre Braschi fê-la crescer em Mugnano e vendo a devoção a Santa Filomena nessa pequena comunidade, deseja vê-la reavivada. A Associação do Rosário Vivo começou o seu renascimento nos Estados Unidos em 8 de Dezembro de 1986 com Patti e Richard Melvin. Patti e Richard Melvin da Arquiconfraria Universal de Santa Filomena são, agora, um Centro Oficial da Arquiconfraria de Santa Filomena. Têm permissão para convidar os membros de todo o Mundo desde onde os leve a sua associação. Monsenhor Giovanni Braschi encoraja, a todos quantos visitam o Santuário, a renovar a sua devoção a Nossa Senhora sob a poderosa protecção de Santa Filomena. Esta devoção é muito importante para a Virgem Maria já que ela é a Rainha dos Mártires e a Mãe da nossa Sagrada Igreja. Através da sua intercessão, Santa Filomena leva-nos aos corações de Jesus e Maria. "Aleluia! Ditosos são aqueles que temem o SENHOR, que se deleitam nos mandamentos de Deus. A sua descendência será poderosa na Terra, Uma geração recta e bendita." (Salmo 112:1-2,As bênçãos dos justos) Quando reflectimos sobre esta escritura sagrada, somos inspirados a obedecer aos mandamentos de Deus, a amar Jesus com todo o nosso coração e alma e ao desejo de lhe agradar. A Sua promessa para nós são bênçãos por uma geração de gente piedosa. Tudo o que fazemos tem um efeito de bom e de mal em toda uma geração. Se queremos que os nossos filhos tenham êxito em tudo o que fazem, há que encorajar a ter Cristo no centro das suas vidas. Jesus é o MELHOR presente que podemos dar aos nossos filhos e aos entes queridos. Ele é a única oferta que permanece por toda a eternidade. "The aim of the Living Rosary is to ask God, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, for the conservation of the Faith in Catholic countries, the conversion of sinners, the strengthening of the just, and the exaltation of the Holy Church.

The people who join together for this pious exercise, divide among themselves the recitation of the prayers of the entire Rosary, and divide into groups of fifteen, in honor of the fifteen principal mysteries of our redemption. Their intention is to form, by the union of their hearts, as so many living rosaries which unceasingly recall to the Celestial Father the sign of salvation manifested to St. Dominic by the Mother of Mercies.

After Our Lady of the Rosary, the Association recognizes and honors as its Mediatrix before God, the illustrious Virgin and Martyr, St. Philomena, named by the Sovereign Pontiff, protectress of the Living Rosary.

Our Holy Father, Pope Gregory XVI, enriched this institution with numerous indulgences in favor of all the Catholic countries and gave it for a protector a pious Cardinal eminently devoted to the august Mother of God."

Calling on Venerable Pauline Jaricot for Help
I purposely chose this day, January 9, to send our first New Flash to you on this, the anniversary of the day Pauline left us in the year 1862 to spend eternity in Paradise. As we are graced with another year and are faced with ever-challenging times including extreme economic strife for so many of our brothers and sisters, we are reminded of the financial hardships experienced by our very own foundress Venerable Pauline Marie Jaricot. She had tremendous financial difficulties at the start of this holy mission when thousands of dollars she raised through her reputable name were stolen from her never to be recovered. She was falsely accused by her persecutors who pretended to be holy people, but, by their actions, were not. Through her unwavering commitment and faith in Christ Jesus, she overcame unbelievable odds and successfully formed this association; she died a bankrupt woman and left behind a beautiful legacy, which now includes 11,191,301 apostles around the world. Pauline has rightfully gained her place as the patroness of those in financial distress. She is mother of the poor, advocate of debtors, and help to all those persecuted. She understands your plight and anxieties. You can call upon Pauline and she will hear your prayers, ease your burden and obtain for you the special graces needed to carry your heavy crosses with courage and hope.

In Pauline's words, one aim of the association is to seek God's help for the "strengthening of the just" through our shared devotion to the Holy Rosary and love of the Holy Church and our Lord. Let us remember to call on Pauline whenever we encounter difficulties and rest assured she is a guiding light for us all; with the help of our beloved Patroness, St. Philomena, our intentions will be lovingly placed at the foot of our Savior's throne. By joining our prayers with hers, we will shower Christ with our unending love and humbly serve Him in His mission of the salvation of souls.

A New Year Greeting…
Let us combine all of our efforts as ULRA members to love very deeply our duty and understand the value of this work in the eyes of Our Everlasting God. Keep your spirits raised up at their highest and let your generous, compassionate hearts be ever the mainspring of your Catholic life bearing always in mind your first ideal -- to be saviors, both of the body and soul. It is He alone whom you serve and for Him alone there can never be enough devotion, sacrifice, or renunciation.

Solidarity, charity, and fraternity are the marks of Christ's disciples. "Il fine del Rosario Vivente e di chiedere a Dio, con l'intercessione di Nostra Signora del Rosario, la conservazione della Fede nei paesi Cattolici, la coversione dei peccatori, il consolidamento del giusto, e l'esaltazione della Santa Chiesa.

Le persone che si uniscono per questo esercizio religioso, si dividono tra loro la recita delle preghiere dell'intero Rosario, e si suddividono in gruppi di quindici persone, in onore dei quindici misteri religiosi della nostra redenzione. Lo scopo é di formare, dall'unione dei loro cuori, altrettanti rosari viventi che ricordano incessantemente al Padre Celeste il segno della salvezza manifestatosi a S. Facciamo appello alla Venerabile Pauline Jaricot per chiedere aiuto
Ho scelto di proposito questo giorno, il 9 gennaio, per inviare la nostra prima circolare NewsFlash, in onore dell'anniversario in cui Pauline nel 1862 ci lasció per trascorrere l'eternitá in Paradiso. Benedetti con l'arrivo di un nuovo anno e dovendo fronteggiare le continue difficolta' di questi tempi compresa la difficile situazione economica di molti nostri fratelli e sorelle, ricordiamoci anche della dura esperienza finanziaria vissuta dalla nostra fondatrice Venerabile Pauline Marie Jaricot. Ella ebbe terribilli difficoltá finanziarie all'inizio di questa santa missione quando migliaia di dollari raccolti grazie al suo rispettabile buon nome Le furono rubati e mai recuperati. Per questo fu ingiustamente accusata dai suoi persecutori che pretendevano di essere persone religiose ma che dato le loro azioni non lo erano di certo. Nonostante ció, con il suo risoluto impegno e fede in Gesú Cristo, riuscí a superare incredibili difficoltá e a fondare con successo questa associazione; morí che era in stato di bancarotta ma ha lasciato una bellissima ereditá, che oggi comprende 11,191,196 apostoli in tutto il mondo. Pauline si é giustamente guadagnata la posizione di padrona di coloro che sono in difficoltá finanziarie. Ella é madre dei poveri, avvocata dei debitori e aiuto per tutti coloro che sono perseguitati. Ella comprende benissimo la vostra situazione e ansie. Potete fare appello a Pauline e lei ascolterá le vostre preghiere, attenuerá il vostro peso e otterrá per voi grazie speciali necessarie affinché possiate trasportare con coraggio e speranza le vostre pesanti croci.

Usando le parole di Pauline, uno degli scopi dell'associazione é di cercare l'aiuto di Dio per "il consolidamento del giusto" mediante la nostra devozione al Santo Rosario e amore per la Santa Chiesa e nostro Signore. The aim of the Living Rosary is to ask God, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, the conservation of the Faith in Catholic countries, the conversion of sinners, the strengthening of the just, and the exaltation of the Holy Church.

The people who join together for this pious exercise, divide among themselves the recitation of the prayers of the entire Rosary, and divide into groups of 15, in honor of the 15 principal mysteries of our redemption. Their intention is to form, by the union of their hearts, as so many living rosaries which unceasingly recall to the Celestial Father the sign of salvation manifested to St. Dominic by the Mother of Mercies.

After Our Lady of the Rosary, the Association recognizes and honors as its mediatrix before God, the illustrious Virgin and Martyr, St. Philomena, named by the Sovereign Pontiff, protectress of the Living Rosary.

The principal obligation of each Associate consists in reciting, each day, one decade; that is, one Our Father, ten Hail Mary, and the Glory Be to the Father, meditating, according to one’s comprehension, on one of the mysteries of the Rosary, whose allotment is done each month.

By this method, the great rosary of St. Dominic is said in its entirety each day, in all 15 decades, and all the mysteries are honored at one time.

This ancient and venerable prayer, so productive of fruits of salvation and of which the experience of many centuries has demonstrated its efficacy to touch the heart of God, acquired, in some manner, a new strength in the Living Rosary, by the great number and the concord of those who recite it.

In prescribing to pray for others, this exercise is also a means of personal sanctification for the Associates. A short meditation, which is reiterated every day for a month, on the same mystery, joined to the recitation of the decade, insinuates little by little, in the spirit, the truths of the religion and increases in the hearts the live of Jesus and Mary.

The reports of favors obtained by the exercise of the Living Rosary contributes also to nourish the piety of the Associates by developing among them the virtues of charity and of zeal at the same time furnishing powerful motives of encouragement and edification.

Besides, the Associates who, for the triumph of the Faith and the salvation of souls offer each day to God the Father, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the infinite merits of the Savior’s mysteries, may well hope that these divine merits will be applied to them, through God’s goodness, and will draw upon them, according to their needs, either new life or grades of conversion.

The brevity of the Living Rosary puts it at the disposal of the faithful of all ages and of all conditions; the persons who say daily the entire Rosary, or the third of the Rosary, can reserve for the pious exercise one of the decades they are in the habit of reciting. As to those who do not practice this devotion in any manner, the Living Rosary cannot but dispose them to adopt it later on, by making known to them the consolations attached to saying it.

Our Holy Father, Pope Gregory XVI, enriched this institution with numerous indulgences in favor of all the Catholic countries and gave it for a protector a pious Cardinal eminently devoted to the august Mother of God.

By a title of affiliation that the Principal-Directors hold by goodness of T.R.P. Superior General of the order of St. Dominic, the Associates of the Living Rosary are admitted to participation in the merits of all the holy masses, prayers, penitence, preaching, and the other good works of the religious of this Order.

For the indulgences and the other rules, see the manual for the use of the Associates published by the main bureau. (Lyon rise of Fourvieres, 50).

Moreover, if the Zealot wishes to keep a memorandum of the allotment of the mysteries, it is easy for him or her to transfer, at the time of changes, the name of each Associate beside the mystery he or she had been assigned.

Hence, if by the death or any other reason, the group of fifteen loses one of its members, the mobility of the little tabs makes it possible to change the inscription of names without altering the bulletin-board.

The History of the Universal Arch Confraternity of Saint Philomena

The Universal Arch Confraternity of Saint Philomena has its humble beginnings, was born and raised to Universal by Rome, all in Paris France.

In France, after the death of the Holy Curé of Ars, Saint John Vianney, in 1859, a zealous priest in Paris, called Father Luis Petit, consecrated his life to making the Little Saint known and loved. "Far from us the thought," said the virtuous Father Petit, "to make the cult of Saint Philomena a devotional that could be damaging to the cult of the most Holy Virgin, or even more, the adoration of the only God. That would not be Christian, as we know Christianity to be from the evangelical teachings of the Church. With our devotion to Saint Philomena we bless God who is reflected in His Saints. Honoring Saint Philomena we proclaim the power of God in the strength of His Martyrs, and His Infinite Goodness in the favors He concedes to the prayers of His Saints. This was the theology of the Holy Curé of Ars, and this will be ours also".

In August, 1876, the first copy of the Messenger of Saint Philomena was issued from the headquarters in Paris. This publication spread devotion to her throughout the entire world.
In the tracks of the venerable Father Petit, the Sanctuary published the bulletin, The Voice of Saint Philomena under the guidance of the highly esteemed rector, Monsignor Gennaro Ippolito. This same priest, on February 10th, 1884, at Paris, with the blessing and approval of the Cardinal Giubert, founded the Confraternity of Saint Philomena, called also, the Work of Saint Philomena. So, this is how the Work of Saint Philomena was born. Still today, following the directives of the Sanctuary at Mugnano, it spreads her devotion throughout the world.
In testimony of the above, we publish the following letter:

Very Reverend Father Rector, everywhere to England there can be found devotion to Saint Philomena, and some wish that the Confraternity of the Saint be established in this country. In the diocese of Leads there is a priest, looked upon favorably by the Bishop, who is disposed to act as Spiritual Director of the Confraternity should it eventuate. He would like to know if there is in existence a stable Constitution or Rule for this Confraternity, and he would be very grateful to receive information about this point. In the hope of receiving your kind reply, I give you my most sincere regards, Mrs. Margaret Seddon, Near Keighley, Yorks, England. 11.6.1985.
The Confraternity of Saint Philomena was raised to the rank of Arch Confraternity by Pope Leo XIII, November, 1886

On June 16th, 1907, the Supreme Pontiff Pius X, receiving in audience Father Petit, from Paris, the director of the Work of Saint Philomena, exclaimed: "Ah, Saint Philomena! It is very sad to read what has been written recently against her" (The Holy Father was referring to certain detractors of the cult of Saint Philomena who dared to maintain that our Little Saint did not even exist.) "It is incredible," continued the Holy Father, "that such things can come about without them (the detractors) looking at the great argument in favor of the saint, the Holy Curé of Ars. By her, in her name, and through her intercession, he obtained innumerable graces and continual prodigies."

To definitively affirm the cult of Saint Philomena and to give the final word, on May 21, 1912, Pope Pius raised the Venerable Arch confraternity of Saint Philomena into the Universal Arch confraternity with the Apostolic Brief, "Pias Fidelium Societates," in which he states very clearly: "We decree with the present words that it shall remain always stable, valid and effective, that it receive and obtain its effects fully and completely, in this way it must be regularly judged and defined, and if it proceeds in any other way, it will be null and without value, whatever the authority might be…"

Aims of the Work of Saint Philomena (Universal Arch Confraternity)
The Work of Saint Philomena is an association of prayer and apostolate which resolves:
Commitment to a life according to the Gospel of Christ in the intentions which Pope Leo XIII and Saint Pius X have recommended, promoting them under the patronage of Saint Philomena and the Holy Curé of Ars:

Promotion of the Gospel message in the world of work.
Christian education of children and youth.
Prayer for vocations and the sanctification of the clergy.
Means: To realize these various aims, the Works always avails itself of the prayers, and of the spiritual and material support of its members. The offerings of members are used for the diffusion of the cult through press publications, information releases, pamphlets, etc. The Works publishes a special bulletin, The Voice of Saint Philomena.

Organization:
Little Members. This section comprises children under 14 years of age who have confided themselves to the protection of Saint Philomena. The Little Members of Saint Philomena, if they wish, can do much for the reign of Christ, since prayer is the great force in the world.
Members: These place themselves under the protection of Saint Phil0omena. They unite their prayers and their apostolate together with those of the other Members of the Archconfraternity on behalf of the other members and for the great intentions that the Church has entrusted to the Association.

Members of The Cord of Saint Philomena: Members of the Archconfraternity who wish to place themselves in particular manner under the protection of Philomena, or who desire to imitate more the example of the young martyr in the perfect practice of the duties of their state, carry as a badge, tied around their body, a white and red Cord which represents the virtues of their patron Saint:Faith and the purity of virginity;Charity and the generosity of martyrdom.
The Cord is a sign of special devotion towards her, and is carried to obtain special graces, particularly that of following a chaste life according to one's state. It is recommended for those who carry the Cord, to recite every day the following prayer:

Dear Saint Philomena, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us, so that through your powerful intercession, we may obtain that purity of spirit and of heart that leads to perfect Love of God. Amen.

His Holiness Leo XIII approved and enriched this devotion with precious indulgences in the Apostolic Brief of April 4, 1884.

Institution and Enrolment: Any priest or lay person involved in the promoting of evangelical ideals may form a Pious Confraternity of Saint Philomena, with the approval of the local bishop and the consent of the rector of the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena. Any Confraternity of Saint Philomena must conform to the principles of the statutes of the Universal Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena instituted by Saint Pius X in the Apostolic Brief "Pias Fidelium Societates" of May 21, 1912. Generous souls who desire to work fervently for the diffusion of the reign of God, find in the Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena favorable terrain to satisfy their ideals and their devotions.

OBLIGATIONS
Each member must wear the cord of Saint Philomena as a cincture under their clothing or carry it around with them. The cord must be blessed by the Rector of the Sanctuary or a priest authorized by the Rector.
Each member must read and encourage others to read the life of Saint Philomena.
Each member should recite daily, where possible, the Chaplet of Saint Philomena.
Each member should attend Mass and receive Communion on the 10th January, 25th May, 10th and the 11th August.
Members are encouraged to make an annual donation according to their means, if at all possible.

PRIVILEGES
Mass will be celebrated every second Friday of the month for members living and dead.
The members will benefit in all of the prayers offered at the Sanctuary.
Members will gain a plenary indulgence* when one wears the Cord**, on the feast days of 10th January, 25th May, 10th and the 11th August.
A plenary indulgence* is gained at the hour of death provided one invokes the name of Jesus, with one's own lips or heart. This same indulgence can be gained if for a grave reason one is unable to go to Confession or receive Communion, provided one is repentant.
*Under the conditions laid down by the Church; confession, communion and prayer for the Holy Father, are required to gain a plenary indulgence.
**Pope Leo XIII approved and indulged Saint Philomena's blessed cord on the 15th December 1883.
